Mathematics
At Marlborough Primary School, we strive to make Maths fun, engaging, and interesting for all children. In EYFS, learning is underpinned by the characteristics of effective learning: playing and exploring and engagement; active learning and motivation; creating and thinking critically. In KS1 and KS2, our Maths curriculum is planned to ensure that children develop mathematical fluency, can reason mathematically and can solve problems by applying their maths to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication. We aim to develop children’s conceptual understanding as well as the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and with increasing accuracy. We stress the importance of knowing multiplication facts and so by the end of Year 4, pupils should confidently recall all times tables up to and including the 12 times table. We plan for a variety of opportunities across the curriculum for children to be able to confidently apply their mathematical knowledge and to recognise the importance of maths in the wider world. Using the White Rose Maths program of learning, we ensure that the whole content of the 2014 National Curriculum is taught in carefully constructed and sequenced blocks of teaching, tailored to the needs of all children.
